Lysol’s Professional Disinfectant Basin Tub & Tile Cleaner contains some suspect ingredients, including fragrance, but overall scores better than many conventional bathroom cleaners. It contains antibacterial essential oils, including orange and lavender. Although the cleaner only has seven ingredients (usually a good sign), it earned a B, not an A rating, from the EWG. This product mostly earned a B because of its use of fragrance, which is a vague term. Meyer’s website says that the product uses a “mixture of natural, high- quality essential oils and safe synthetic fragrance ingredients.” Maybe so, but the EWG won’t give a higher rating without full disclosure of ingredients. Keep your loo clean and fresh with Ecover’s Toilet Bowl Cleaner. This nontoxic cleaner comes in a plastic bottle, but it’s not your usual plastic. Ecover’s plastic packaging is made from sugar cane, not crude oil. What about what’s inside the packaging? The formula for Ecover’s Toilet Bowl Cleaner earned a B rating from EWG, likely because the cleaner includes “fragrance.” Fragrance is a vague term that doesn’t disclose all of the ingredients in the product. The Best Shower Filters Of 2. If you only want to remove free chlorine and other impurities from your water, I recommend getting a Sprite Shower Filter. This is one of the few showers filters that will remove most free chlorine from your shower. If you want to remove both chloramines and chlorine from your shower, I recommend a vitamin- C based shower filter, like the Sonaki In- Line Filter. However, if you read the tests carefully, you’ll see that they apply to “free chorine” (chlorine that has not combined with other constituents in water), and the reality is that KDF- filters have little effect on “total chlorine” (combined chlorine). In fact, chlorine is often added at the water plant as a blend with ammonia called “chloramine.” KDF is not effective at removing chloramine or combined chlorine. Here are the details on my recommended shower filters: Vitamin C Shower Filters. Vitamin C shower filters are very effective in removing chlorine and chloramines from shower water. Chloramine or NH2. Cl (a combination of chlorine and ammonia) is now commonly being used in place of chlorine for disinfection, but chloramines are not easily removed from water. Carbon filters are virtually useless in showers, because they do not work when the water is warm, and they also get clogged fairly quickly. KDF filters also don’t perform well in hot water, and they don’t remove chloramines. However, Vitamin C filters can remove chloramines effectively from water. To back this up, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission now states on their website that only Vitamin C can be used to remove chlormaines from municipal water. Besides the fact that it does not remove chloramines, this is pretty good filter, and it is constructed with brass instead of the usual plastic. Vegetables provide most vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients. The nutrient- density of meals is even more important for those with hypothyroidism and other autoimmune diseases, where nutrient absorption and deficiency are more common. Emphasis goes to green leafy vegetables, mushrooms and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. Veggies are also our greatest source of fibre, a nutrient that feeds the healthy bacteria in our gut. Studies show that long- term low fibre intake will completely throw out the balance of your gut bacteria; the effects on the gut health of mice was irreversible (5). As a general guide, the protein portion of your meal should be the size of your palm, and salad/vegetables the size of your hand. This would leave about 1/4 or less of your plate for carbs (such as rice or potato or pasta). Summary: Protein foods and vegetables should make up the majority of your plate. They are generally the most filling and/or nutrient- dense foods per calorie. Increase your intake of Selenium and Zinc. Selenium and zinc are two nutrients directly involved in thyroid function. It is critical that your diet contains adequate quantities in order to optimise thyroid hormone production and metabolism. Selenium. Selenium is an essential mineral that helps the body to recycle iodine. That’s the reason the thyroid has the highest selenium content (per gram of tissue) of all our organs (6). Therefore, it’s thought that low selenium levels contribute to hypothyroidism through alternate mechanisms related to iodine. For this reason it’s fundamental to eat a diet that contains many selenium- rich foods, such as: Brazil nuts. Tuna and sardines. Beef and chicken. Eggs. Legumes. Zinc. Zincis an essential mineral required to regulate Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). In fact, the metabolism of zinc and thyroid hormones are closely interlinked, which is why a deficiency can lead to alopecia (hair loss) (7). While zinc deficiency is very uncommon in the developed world, it’s still recommended to eat a variety of zinc- rich foods (8). This includes: Oysters and shellfish. Beef and chicken. Legumes, nuts and seeds. Milk and yoghurt. Iodine is also important for thyroid health, but in reality insufficient iodine levels that can harm the thyroid is extremely rare in developed countries (9). You’re much better off focusing on selenium and zinc- rich foods, many of which contain iodine anyways. Summary: Consuming a diet naturally rich in selenium and zinc is critical for maintaining a healthy thyroid and metabolism. Take regular walks or start lifting weights each week“You can’t out- exercise a bad diet.”This is true, especially when your metabolism is slower than normal. That’s why this article places so much emphasis on dietary changes. However, if you want to kick- start your weight loss then regular exercise is the best way to do it. Weight loss ultimately comes down to expending more energy (calories) than you consume. Although it’s much more complex than “eat less, move more” (there are many biological factors to consider), being active helps to burn additional calories. It also improves aspects of health that even perfect nutrition can’t provide, such as strength and mobility. You don’t have to put yourself through miserable high- intensity workouts either. Research shows that low- intensity exercise that lasts longer – such as regular long walks – are just as effective for weight loss, especially if you are just starting out (1. A general guideline is to walk for at least 6. Unable to do cardio exercise. Regularly lifting weights (or bodyweight exercises) is also highly beneficial, especially if mobility is an issue for you. In fact, it’s equally as important as cardio and we should be doing both where possible. Known as resistance exercise, it still helps burns additional calories, but with the added benefit of building lean muscle. The more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism and the less likely you are to fall ill (1. It is said to have emerged from the Paleo movement (and sometimes referred to as Autoimmune Paleo), but to describe it as Paleo seems too basic. The AIP goes by the premise that certain food chemicals and compounds cause low- grade inflammation in the gut of individuals with an autoimmune disease (in this case Hashimoto’s disease). Low- grade inflammation appears to be a driving factor behind many modern health conditions, including autoimmune diseases, metabolic disorder and obesity too (1. By removing the everyday trigger foods in your diet, inflammation subsides giving your body the opportunity to recover and “reset”; known medically as remission. This is what occurs in celiac disease patients when they remove gluten from the diet, or most IBS patients following a low FODMAP diet. Is It Evidence- Based? I’ll admit I was highly sceptical of this theory at first; researchers in the area of rheumatology/immunology rarely do randomised trials on elimination diets (the only way to prove “cause and effect”). That means we still cannot reliably say what foods influence autoimmune diseases and their symptoms (nor to what extent). Does it help because you cut out specific trigger food components? Or because such restriction inadvertently forces you to eat healthier consistently? Or is it a combination of both? It’s hard to say, but we cannot ignore the abundance of non- trial and anecdotal evidence (personal testimonial) that indicate AIP helps with a variety of symptoms. Although only temporary, elimination diets like AIP are highly restrictive and can get complicated if you take medications for other medical conditions or are at risk of nutrient deficiencies. It’s fundamental you speak with your doctor before beginning. Reasons Armour Thyroid isn't Helping you with Weight Loss. Are you taking Armour Thyroid and not losing weight? Would it surprise you to know that MANY people are in the same position as you? The truth is that Armour Thyroid CAN help with weight loss, but it is definitely NOT a magic weight loss pill. Having said that.. There are several reasons why Armour Thyroid isn't helping you lose weight and there are several things YOU can do to fix them.? Most people when they switch to armour thyroid except that their extra weight will magically start shedding off.. And about 9. 0% of people who make the switch don't see those results. Why does this happen? Another hormone imbalance.. Poor diet.. Too much stress.. You get the picture. You Aren't Being Dosed Correctly. One of the biggest issues is that many patients are being under treated or under dosed. Armour thyroid contains a combination of T4 (the inactive thyroid hormone) and T3 (the active thyroid hormone). One of the main reasons that patients feel BETTER on Armour Thyroid is because of the active T3 portion. This portion is actually still quite small: 1 grain = 3. T4 and 9mcg of T3. The point is that whenever you give a patient T3 it is approximately 3. TSH than T4 medication alone (Synthroid and Levothyroxine). Transitioning from T4 only Medication to Armour Thyroid. In my experience 1 grain of Armour Thyroid is closer to 5. T4. Using this conversion you can see how most people end up under- treated. They are previously on 1. T4 medication and are subsequently switched to 1 grain of Armour and they feel no different, when in reality they have most likely just cut their thyroid dosing in half. More accurate conversion looks like this: 5. T4 = 1 grain of Armour. T4 = 2 grains of Armour. T4 = 3 grains of Armour . If you dose your Armour too quickly you are likely to end up with side effects from the T3: Heart palpitations, Anxiety, Heat intolerance, etc. Instead start off on a lower dose and titrate up SLOWLY every 1. You Need More T3 Added to your Thyroid Hormone Replacement. Armour thyroid (and other forms of Natural Desiccated thyroid) contain fixed ratios of T4 to T3. Meaning the amount of T3 in each grain of Armour is always the same. Unfortunately some people may require higher amounts of T3 due to tissue level hypothyroidism or the euthyroid sick syndrome. In both of these conditions patients may require higher doses of T3 to saturate cellular receptors and allow thyroid hormone to get into the cells. How do you know if you are someone who needs more T3? Patients . Adding T3 to Armour Thyroid. One problem with armour thyroid (and NDT in general) is the static dosing in each individual grain of hormone. Each grain gives you 3. T4 and 9mcg of T3. This is ok for some patients but doesn't allow for altering individual dosing of the T4 and T3 if necessary. Supraphysiologic dosing of T3 not only helps to overcome these hormone imbalances. In my experience (and if used safely) . This is also confirmed with studies which have shown that transitioning from T4 to T3 dosing (based off of pituitary and TSH testing) improves all of these markers. In many patients dropping armour thyroid total dosing and adding T3 can be sufficient to improve symptoms and provide improved weight loss by itself. You are Suffering from Leptin Resistance. If you have leptin resistance it doesn't matter how little you eat, how much you exercise or what your dose of thyroid hormone is.. You simply won't lose weight until it is treated. And, to make matters worse - high levels of leptin actually decrease T4 to T3 conversion in the body. How do you know if you have Leptin resistance? Leptin levels can be tested easily in the serum and fasting leptin levels higher than 1. Patients with leptin resistance generally require higher levels of T3 only medications to help reduce the T4 to reverse T3 conversion that occurs with this condition. It's important to note that leptin resistance is generally a late finding and indicates that heavy metabolic damage has occurred. Leptin resistance is often accompanied by insulin resistance and thyroid resistance (all three conditions are caused by the same thing). These changes in inactive ingredients help to explain why some patients react poorly to Armour thyroid with symptoms like headaches, worsening fatigue or rashes - only to find that these symptoms completely resolve upon switching to naturethroid. Again it's not the difference in the concentration of thyroid hormone in each individual medication but most likely a reflection of digestion and absorption. These are the inactive ingredients in armour thyroid that may cause some patients to either do better on the medication or worse. You can think about methylcellulose as a glue which holds on tight to the thyroid hormone component of the medication, and in order for absorption your body must break the grip. Unfortunately many patients with hypothyroidism also have gastrointestinal issues including low stomach acid. This may result in decreased absorption of thyroid hormone or a .
